Dana White: Conor McGregor needs to defend that UFC title:

The chances of McGregor being stripped are slim with these recent comments.

UFC head honcho Dana White has once again reiterated that current UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor must defend his title upon a possible return to the octagon, subsequently ruling out the rumors of a potential 'superfight' with the recently returning Georges St. Pierre in the process. Speaking with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharp on Skip and Shannon: Undisputed, the promotion's president admitted how it is still unclear if 'The Notorious' one will grace the octagon again, but insisted a premier title defense would await the Dubliner.

"If Conor McGregor fights next year, that’ll be awesome. If Conor McGregor doesn’t fight, the UFC will go on. There’s two different sides to this coin, there’s the one that you just said about it being hard to wake up in the morning and get hit in the face when you’re so rich, then there’s the one where there is only so many trips you can go on and there’s only so much stuff you can buy before you start to get bored and you want to get back in the game. So, I don’t know. I don’t really have a feel on what Conor wants to do. Conor’s rich, it’s the holidays, I’m sure his whole family had a great Christmas. We’ll see what the New Year brings.”

McGregor of course last competed in the UFC back in November 2016, claiming the Lightweight crown to become the first and only multiple weight champion simultaneously in UFC history, as he over threw Eddie Alvarez in arguably his most impressive display to date besides his 13 second KO win at Featherweight over Brazil's José Aldo. The SBGi product faced Floyd Mayweather in his professional boxing bow back in August and was stopped in the tenth round by the undefeated former WBC champion, in a meeting that reportedly earned Conor north of $80 million.

“What we have to do, is he needs to defend that title. Nate isn’t even in the title picture. Nate’s ranked – that’s one of those fights that shouldn’t have been made in the first place, but it happened at that time and it was great, it was an amazing fight. People loved it, so somewhere down the line there’s a possibility for a trilogy, but right now he has to defend his title against Tony Ferguson. Tony Ferguson is the fight right now and is the move if he wants to come back. Whoever wins the  Barboza/Khabib fight while we’re trying to figure out this Conor mess, could end up fighting Tony Ferguson for the opportunity to fight Conor McGregor. So, we’ll see.”

McGregor sparked speculation of a potential return in a recent encounter with TMZ, as he told how a "real fight" is on the cards, squashing talk of a second boxing venture for the time being, this time against either Manny Pacquaio or Paulie Malignaggi. Even more reason to believe a mixed martial arts contest can be linked to footage and pictures of McGregor brushing up on his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Straight Blast Gym, a possible nod to a match up against Interim title holder Tony 'El Cucuy' Ferguson.
