Cynthia Calvillo vs. Carla Esparza: What will go down:

Calvillo has looked like a capable challenger since her March bow

A possible UFC Women's Strawweight title eliminator features on the main card of UFC 219 next weekend as rising contender Cynthia Calvillo faces former division queen Carla 'Cookie Monster' Esparza. The undefeated Calvillo arrived on the UFC stage back in March and has gone 3-0 in the promotion, most recently claiming a decisive decision against talented striker Joanne Calderwood. The inaugural 115lbs champ Esparza got back to winning ways against Maryna Moroz in dominant fashion last time out, and now gets a shot at the #6 ranked Cynthia Calvillo.

With an extensive and highly regarded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game, Cali's Calvillo has dispatched all three of her UFC opponents with mere ease so far, submitting both Amanda Cooper and Pearl Gonzalez via high level rear-naked chokes. Another impressive name on Cynthia's professional win column is recent UFC debutante Aspen Ladd, with the 30 year-old convincingly stopping her fellow Californian.

Arguably the toughest test of Calvillo's young career to date will come against former champ Esparza, especially in any wrestling or BJJ scrambles, with the one time Invicta FC champ providing stiff competition in the form of her purple belt in grappling. Esparza noticeably holds a submission victory over recently crowned Strawweight champion 'Thug' Rose Namajunas in her one and only UFC title fight to date, before she was systematically dismantled by Polish striking sensation Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Other standout names on the résumé of the 'Cookie Monster' are fellow former Invicta champ Angela Hill, expected next title challenger Tecia 'Tiny Tornado' Torres and also one time title challenger Jessica Penne.

Cynthia Calvillo via unanimous decision.
