Khabib vs. McGregor UFC 229 Presser: The Fallout:

Intense, to say the least.

The dust has somewhat settled after both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Lightweight title challenger Conor McGregor traded barbs at the UFC 229 Press Conference in New York last Thursday night. The stoic Khabib sat almost expressionless for the majority of the polarizing McGregor's verbal jabs as the Dubliner not only used his well traversed 'truth' talking tactic to try and lure Nurmagomedov into a mental back and forth, but also used his recently patented Proper Twelve whiskey and 'his' two championship belts to taunt the undefeated 'Eagle'.

We seen arguably the most cagey and emotional McGregor pre-fight on display at the media event with the former champion targeting both Khabib personally, but also to many's disgust, his Dagestan background and religious beliefs. After offering Khabib a celebratory birthday finger of Proper Twelve which the devote Muslim refused, claiming "I never drink", McGregor responded with "I'd say you're some buzz at parties, you mad backwards c**t." UFC head honcho Dana White promptly  preventing an altercation between the two.

The deeper McGregor got into his bottle of whiskey, the more personal his taunts at Khabib got. Keeping his cool for the most of the exchanges, Conor drew a back and forth from the Russian after he questioned why he wouldn't step off the red fighter bus in the loading area of the Barclays Centre; "I showed you my hands and you took a s**t on the back of the bus." Khabib tried to justify his decision to remain on the now parked coach, but his retort of the presence of "forty guys" from McGregor's entourage was quickly struck down by the challenger who pointed to Khabib's initial confrontation with Artem Lobov in which Khabib also had a large posse surrounding him.

Three barbs which really hit home with Khabib came with McGregor's extensive research of  his relationship with Ziyavudin Magomedov, a Russian oligarch who is currently serving a prison sentence for embezzlement of state funds, Khabib's father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov's links with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the 1999 war between Chechnya and Dagestan. Ziyuvudin invested a large sum of money into the team he founded, Eagles MMA, but his apparent embezzlement of funds has resulted in him facing trial whilst in jail.

McGregor passionately criticized Khabib's father Abdulmanap or "Lickarse O' Holihan" as he was referred to by the Dubliner, after he pointed to an Instagram post in which Abdulmanap, a Dagestan native, looked to mend relationships with Chechnya and Kadyrov, captioning a photo of the dictator as 'Together we are strong', McGregor called the caption "fake respect out of fear, the Chechen people know, if the tables were turned and there was an opportunity for his father to stab that man (Kadyrov) in the back, he would do it in a heartbeat to take over, and he did not do nothing, and that's why he's a quivering coward."

Finally, McGregor jabbed at the war between Chechnya and Dagestan citing that the Dagestan people are known for "fake respect out of fear, that's what these men are known for, they were chased from their land, they were chased to the edge of cliffs. My family, my bloodline the McGregor clan we stood and we fought, we fought the English empire, so much so our name was banished for one hundred years by King James at the time."

One parting shot from the brash 'Notorious' one was aimed at Khabib's manager, the controversial Ali Abdelaziz, after he questioned why McGregor was carrying two belts after an intense face off. "Shut your mouth, Ali Abdelaziz, mad terrorist, mad terrorist snitch, I know a lot about you as well you mad rat, I know a lot about you as well, you keep your mouth shut kid, how's Noah? how's Noah?, yeah shut your mouth." Ali is believed to be a former jihadist who became an informant, but also has a teenage son from a previous relationship who he made an offer of $10,000 to after failing to make pre-arranged child support payments, missing up to $50,000 to the child's mother.
