What's next for Tyron Woodley:
Woodley may have missed the boat on his big pay day after GSP dismissal |
After a quite uneventful co-main event meeting between Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Brazil's Demian Maia at UFC 214, the next logical path seems hugely unclear for 'The Chosen One'. The explosive striker was criticised by both a section of UFC fans and organisation president Dana White for his showing, which many believed was lacklustre throughout. Woodley didn't really over exert himself too much over the five round championship clash, electing to avoid any takedowns and possible grappling exchanges between himself and arguably the greatest BJJ practitioner in MMA history. Woodley was expected to take on the returning Georges St-Pierre with a victory over Maia, but his lack of firepower and will to finish the fight, has seen current Middleweight king Michael Bisping handed the bout against GSP in the UFC 217 headliner.
Robbie Lawler rematch: Not an impossible suggestion and maybe a quite probable next venture into the octagon for Woodley, would see former division boogeyman Robbie Lawler challenge to reclaim his crown in an intense rematch between two of the heaviest hitters and scariest forces at 170lbs. Lawler was steamrolled by Woodley early on with the first legitimate shot of the bout in his most recent loss, before going the distance against Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone in a closely contested pairing. Lawler currently resides at the #2 spot at Welterweight, which should prove sufficient to meet Tyron one more time.
'Wonderboy Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal winner: Although the bout in question is yet to take place or even officially booked, it seems it's a question of when and not if for this one. Both men were unfortunate to find themselves coming off losses, with Thompson losing yet another razor-thin decision to former foe Woodley, while 'Gamebred' Masvidal exited Texas with a close three round decision defeat in a title eliminator against the aforementioned Maia. This matchup would almost guarantee a striking affair no matter who takes on Woodley, something which may even more entice Dana White to make the title fight.
Conor McGregor superfight: This one isn't all that unlikely as some may seem to believe. Despite the task of a Floyd Mayweather Jr. boxing less than two weeks away, the current Lightweight champion has strongly hinted at an almost immediate return to the mixed-martial arts world, with rumours suggesting a main event appearance at UFC 219 on December 30th is firmly in the sights of 'The Notorious' one. Although the most likely opponent would see McGregor face either Khabib Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson or Nate Diaz in a trilogy bout, it would be incredibly difficult for Dana White to deny the UFC ''unicorn'' his shot at a third world title in the promotion.
