Tony Ferguson out of UFC 223 headliner, Khabib now faces Max Holloway for the Lightweight title:

For the fourth separate occasion, a Lightweight meeting between Tony 'El Cucuy' Ferguson and Khabib 'The Eagle' Nurmagomedov has fallen out, with current Interim champion Ferguson tearing his LCL during a "freak accident" whilst carrying out UFC media obligations. Ferguson, who was scheduled to face off with long term foe Khabib this Saturday at the Barclays Centre for the undisputed championship, has subsequently been replaced by Hawaii favourite and 145lbs best Max 'Blessed' Holloway who will look to add the Lightweight crown to his already gold ridden waist on just 6 days notice.

Ferguson will now lose him Interim title which he claimed via an expert triangle victory over Kevin Lee last October, with UFC head honcho Dana White confirming how when and if Holloway and Nurmagomedov clash on Saturday night, the undisputed title will be up for grabs. Elaborating a little further, White suggested that current Lightweight champion Conor McGregor may return in September with the intention of facing the victor of the new UFC 223 pairing, Holloway is undefeated in his last 12 outings, with the aforementioned 'Notorious' one handing him his only loss since then. Holloway recently scored two consecutive stoppage victories over José Aldo, and with Brian Ortega waiting in the wings after starching Frankie Edgar, a monstrous win over Khabib would set up the dream re-run with McGregor, with possibly both titles up for grabs. If Khabib maintains his perfect undefeated record by Sunday morning, the Dagestani bruiser is rumored to headline the promotion's premier trip to Russia, where he would defend the crown against Dublin's McGregor.
