Dustin Poirier meets the returning Nate Diaz at UFC 230:
After settling his score with former UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, streaking contender Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier has earned himself something of a 'money fight'. Despite his undeniable form, Poirier has been over looked in terms of a title shot with Khabib Nurmagomedov expected to face Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in October, but has signed the dotted line to bring Stockton favourite Nate Diaz out of his two year hiatus in the co-main event slot of UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu product Diaz has been been on the sidelines indefinitely since his close majority decision loss to arch rival Conor McGregor back at UFC 202, and despite multiple bout arrangements with the likes of Tony Ferguson, Tyron Woodley and Georges St-Pierre, now #10 ranked Diaz has refused every fight offered, in the hope of a rubber match with Conor somewhere down the line.
Diaz initially replaced then Lightweight kingpin Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 in a five round Welterweight clash with McGregor, surviving the Dubliner's most polished shots in the opening round to submit him in the second with a expertly applied rear-naked choke.
After a failed UFC 200 rematch, Diaz and McGregor clashed once one at UFC 202, with 'The Notorious' one just doing enough to get the nod from the judges on the night.
A somewhat career rejuvenating victory over now #3 ranked Poirier firmly reinstates Nate into title contention, and also sets up the possibility of a trilogy meeting with McGregor should the SBGi trainee get paired with and overcome the undefeated Nurmagomedov.
