Heavyweight behemoths Overeem and Ngannou co-headline UFC 218:
Overeem is vying for a second title seige. |
Kickboxing and MMA veteran Overeem has displayed such a cautious yet successful style in his last 7 or so contests, with his only defeat occurring against current champ Stipe Miocic, despite dropping the Cleveland fan favourite early in the first. Amassing an impressive 6-1 record in that period, the 37 year-old has stopped Andrei Arlovski, Stefan Struve, Junior dos Santos and stunningly smashing Mark Hunt. Overeem continued his fine form as of recent times, picking up a unanimous decision victory over yet another former UFC champ, this time in the form of Fabrício Werdum. One of the greatest strikers in the entire history of mixed-martial arts, Overeem has held titles in DREAM, Strikeforce, K-1 World Grand Prix and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, but UFC gold has always seemed to allude the Dutch born striker.
Viewed by many to be the natural successor to Overeem, Batié born Francis Ngannou has surged through all five of his UFC opponents in a spectacular knockout run, most recently and perhaps impressively starching former division king Andrei Arlovski in his last contest. The 31 year-old has generated some credible hype and has deservedly found himself in legitimate title contention with his spectacular stoppages, and a win over the dangerous Overeem would only serve to boost his chances of meeting Heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic in the near future. The incredible physique and sheer stature of 'The Predator' certainly adds to the possible dominance of the striker and with the possibility of a Heavyweight return of Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson, a meeting of two severe knockout artists could very well be on the horizon for fight fans if Overeem is dispatched by Ngannou.
