Conor McGregor rumored to meet either Ferguson or Khabib in the Octagon post UFC 223:

McGregor is rumored to be on the cusp of a late 2018 return.
Some what of a hype generator to a title clash between bitter rivals is of course the post title fight or even eliminator confrontation between either champion or top contender. Think back to Georges St-Pierre's war of words with then Welterweight champion Matt Hughes or even more recently, Bantamweight best Amanda Nunes' storming of the Octagon to come face to face with Valentina Shevchenko ahead of their second clash. It's become a cautionary practice as of late in the Ultimate Fighting Championship due to the high tension situation where fireworks are arguably more possible, regardless of this, recent rumblings have suggested that still listed Lightweight champion Conor McGregor will not only appear cageside at April's UFC 223 in Brooklyn, but after the conclusion of the headliner between Tony 'El Cucuy' Ferguson and the undefeated Khabib 'The Eagle' Nurmagomedov, McGregor and whoever emerges victorious, will come face to face against 'The Notorious' one ahead of a clash, expected in late August or mid September.

McGregor, yet to compete in a mixed-martial arts contest since his UFC 205 victory over Eddie Alvarez back in November 2016, successfully set his sights on enticing Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement and into a final boxing match, subsequently upholding the division for a ludicrous period. An Interim title was even instated with Tony Ferguson slapping a triangle on a staph ridden Kevin Lee to set up this highly anticipated, fourth scheduled match with Khabib, who made easy work of the Muay Thai stand out Edson Barboza in his most recent and somewhat dominant display to date.

These sort of coming together's have been saved for the right type of match up as of late, with the once unrivaled José Aldo expected to confront the aforementioned McGregor after the Dubliner's second round ground and pound stoppage over Dennis Siver, before taking off prior to the square off. In the case of a particularly heated relationship, the promotion has opted to focus on future opponents at cageside, with McGregor deep in thought at UFC 200 watching both Aldo and Frankie Edgar compete for an Interim title in his once owned 145lbs division. Former champions Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre have also found themselves involved in such fiasco's with, Jones intent on returning against Daniel Cormier and Nick Diaz of course issuing a memorable call out to Canada's GSP.

McGregor is expected to be cageside at UFC 223 for SBGi teammate Artem Lobov's Featherweight fight with Alex Caceres, similar to his controversial appearance in Gdansk during the 'The Russian Hammer{s}' decision defeat to Andre Fili.
