Report - Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev Targeted For UFC Fight Night Headliner On January 20th.

A high-stakes, potential UFC welterweight title-eliminator between perennial division contender, Leon 'Rocky' Edwards and surging undefeated talent, Khamzat 'Borz' Chimaev is currently targeted for a rescheduling at a UFC Fight Night event on January 20th. -- taking headlining honours. The event is expected to take place on Wednesday, with the promotion targeting a return to 'Fight Island'.

Originally slated to take main event honours at the final event of the year for the promotion, Edwards was forced out of a December 19th. main event after a positive COVID-19 test ruled the Birmingham native from the tie. Chimaev was subsequently removed from the event, with Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thomspon and Geoff 'Handz of Steel' Neal promoted to main event honours.

Last featuring at UFC Fight Night San Antonio in July of last year, Team Renegade BJJ & MMA trainee, Edwards took home his eighth consecutive victory with a unanimous decision win over former 155-pound champion, Rafael dos Anjos. 

3-0 under the UFC's banner since just July, Chimaev scored a highlight-reel seventeen-second knockout of Gerald 'GM3' Meerschaert at UFC Vegas 11 in September, stopping the Roufusport mainstay with a single punch. News of the targeted reworked tie was first reported by TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter

Edwards, 29, has won his last eight on the trot, adding former lightweight best, dos Anjos to a streak which includes victories over the likes of Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone, Bryan Barberena, Vicente Luque, and Albert Tumenov. 

Edwards' most recent, and sole Octagon defeat came opposite current welterweight titleholder, Kamaru 'The Nigerian Nightmare' Usman at UFC Fight Night Orlando in December of 2015.

AllStars trainee, Chimaev debuted on 'Fight Island' in July, finishing the recently released John Phillips with a second-round kimura, before taking on promotional newcomer, Rhys 'Skeletor' McKee -- scoring a first-round knockout just ten days removed from his organizational bow.
