Raphael Assunção vs. Rob Font: What will go down:

A Bantamweight clash with possible title implications takes place on the Prelims of UFC 226 this weekend as long time top five contender Raphael Assunção meets the fleeting prospect Rob Font in an attempt to earn both men their first title tilts.

Looking to extend his winning run to four on the trot, Recife native Assunção has been a prominent figure at 135lbs since his move from the WEC to the UFC back in 2011, losing only 3 of his 13 bouts.

With decision wins, albeit razor thin over current champion T.J. Dillashaw, former WSOF phenom and probable next championship challenger 'Magic' Marlon Moraes,

Assunção has developed from just a tricky customer on the canvas with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, into a decent striker, evident from his knockout win over youngster Matthew Lopez in his last octagon walk in November.

After a rematch defeat to Dillashaw at UFC 200, Assunção rebounded in another narrow victory, overcoming Serra-Longo Fight Team product Aljamain Sterling in January of 2017.

Finishing expert Rob Font has gone on somewhat of a tear since his promotional debut almost three years ago, scoring a knockout win over George Roop earning a Performance of the Night bonus in the process.

Joey Gomez was next to he dispatched by Font before he ran into division hard hitter John Lineker, losing a decision to the Brazilian bulldozer.

A two fight win streak was next established by Font who knocked out Matt Schnell before grabbing a guillotine win over Douglas Silva da Andrade.

Stumbling once more in his early UFC career, Font was himself submitted by Pedro Munhoz before scoring arguably the most impressive victory of his professional career.

Meeting Brazil Muay Thai expert Thomas Almeida at UFC 220, Font landed a flush head kick before finishing with strikes, taking the #11 spot at Bantamweight.

A victory over Assunção may realistically see Font leapfrog the Brazilian into the #3 position but in my opinion, Assunção may cause some huge problems for Rob Font on the canvas with his BJJ black belt. Font is the cleaner striker and the more likely to score a stoppage win. Classic grappler versus striker matchup.

Raphael Assunção via split decision.
