Conor McGregor Targets July UFC Return:

Clear cut announcement from 'The Notorious' one.

We seem to have some clarity on the future of former UFC Lightweight and Featherweight champion Conor McGregor's future inside the Octagon, despite his ongoing legal proceedings outside the sport. The Dublin native is currently touring America with his family and took part in Chicago's St. Patrick's Day parade alongside Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Speaking with US news network ABC 7, McGregor entertained the possibility of a summer return to action.

"We're currently in negotiations. We're aiming for July. We'll see what happens. I'm staying ready. This morning I was doing incline sprints on the treadmill on my program - the McGregor F.A.S.T. Program - stay in a hotel room. So we're staying on it, getting work in as we go."

A potential July return would spring to mind the UFC 239 fight card during the ever exciting International Fight Week. We've seen the potential Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone clash apparently fall to the waste side due to the UFC's reluctance to headline the card without a title fight, which would see McGregor and Cerrone clash in the co-main event, an unfathomable idea in many people's opinion. I personally believe the 'stumbling block' of fight placement on the card will be resolved due to the legitimate numbers the potential pairing could rake in between them. The prospect of 'The Notorious' one fighting in anything other than the main event is ridiculous to a certain extent considering the man's drawing power. McGregor holds four out of the five biggest gates in UFC history after all.

July also lines up with the recent spat between former foes McGregor and Max Holloway. Holloway of course headlines April's UFC 236 against another former opponent Dustin Poirier with the Interim Lightweight title up for grabs, and a recent Twitter back and forth resulted in a call-out of sorts issued by current Featherweight champion Max who offered a July rematch. Whoever leaves Chicago with the Interim title may find themselves in line for a rematch with Conor. In my opinion, the latter match up, be that against either Holloway or Poirier seems more likely for McGregor and more appealing for the UFC to book based on previous International Fight Weeks of the modern era in which have seen an abundance of title fights, including Interim bouts.
