Jon Jones hints at July Stipe Miocic match up:
(Zuffa LLC) It's a fun matchup! |
It's an often discussed topic among the MMA community, when will UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones make the leap up a division and how he would fare. The Jackson-Wink MMA product teased the potential move on his official Twitter account, questioning fans readiness for a clash with former champ Stipe Miocic. @JonnyBones: "I don't think you guys are ready to witness @stipemiocic and I, would July give you all enough time?"
The controversial 'look-see-do' fighter has seen a career resurgence as of late after multiple headaches both outside and inside the Octagon, and looks to have his career back on the straight and narrow. Facing former foe Alexander Gustafsson for the vacant Light Heavyweight championship at UFC 232 at the end of last year, Jones scored a vicious ground and pound stoppage after some tactical striking, before successfully defending the title against perennial contender Anthony 'Lionheart' Smith at UFC 235 in a largely calculated and one sided display. With both Gustafsson and Smith facing each other at UFC Fight Night Stockholm, it seemed Brazilian division jumper Thiago 'Marreta' Santos was next in line for 'Bones' after a beating of Jan Blachowicz, but a July return against Ohio's Miocic would firmly put the breaks on the bruiser's quest for gold.
Regarded as one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time, fan favorite Stipe Miocic is yet to appear inside the Octagon since losing his Heavyweight throne to AKA's Daniel Comier at last July's UFC 226, and the possibility of a shoe in on the UFC 239 card, would mark an entire year since Miocic last competed. Setting the record for consecutive title defenses in the Heavyweight division against his third victim Francis Ngannou, the heavy hitter dropped the championship to Cormier in the opening round of his next outing.
Rumblings suggest UFC 239 may be headlined by the aforementioned Cormier and the returning WWE superstar Brock Lesner in a Heavyweight championship clash, and the potential Jones vs. Miocic match on the same card would open the door for the winner of each bout to meet later that year for the Heavyweight spoils.
