Featherweight Clash Between José Aldo And Alexander Volkanovski Slated For Brazil's UFC 237:
Aldo may be one win away from another title tilt. |
A potential UFC Featherweight title eliminator is reportedly on deck for UFC 237 in Brazil this May, as former division king pin and pound-for-pound #1 José Aldo takes on Australian up start and division rusher Alexander Volkanovski. Both men have found themselves at the summit of the 145lbs division with former champ Aldo regaining form and is currently riding a two fight win streak, while opponent Volkanovski is undefeated in the UFC, recently dispatching and retiring three time title challenger Chad 'Money' Mendes.
One of the most recognizable and iconic mixed-martial artists of all time, Manaus hero José Aldo 'Jr.' has struck a rich vein of form in his last two Octagon marches, finishing both Jeremy Stephens and compatriot Renato Moicano. Rocked early by the hard hitting Stephens, Aldo recovered and dropped the Iowa native with a vicious body shot in the final minute of the opening round to end his two fight skid. Returning to his home country alongside fellow contender and wily grappler Renato Moicano, Aldo secured another stoppage victory, landing a flurry on the American Top Team Featherweight in the opening seconds of the second round forcing the referee to jump in at Carneiro's mercy.
Making his Octagon bow back in the summer of 2017, the former rugby league player was pitched against Mizuto Hirota, picking up a unanimous decision victory. Following up on his successful debut, Alexander 'The Great' scored a three round win over Shane Young. Wins over Jeremy Kennedy, Darren Elkins and finally Chad Mendes has seen Volkanovski claim the #4 spot at 145lbs. Volkanovski is one of the biggest threats at Featherweight not only in terms of ability but also in terms of stature, competing at Welterweight earlier in his career. His wrestling background is often utilized but his natural strength and power in both hands evident in his knockout win over Chad Mendes and ten previous should give the Aldo camp leader André Pederneiras something to take into consideration, especially given how badly his chin was tested by Max Holloway and Conor McGregor in recent years.
UFC 237 takes place on May 11th in the Rio Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with a Strawweight title clash between Rose Namajunas and home town striker Jéssica Andrade expected to serve as the event headliner. Former Middleweight champion Anderson Silva meets the dangerous Jared Cannonier, with former PRIDE FC ace Antonio Rogério Nogueira meeting Ryan Spann at Light Heavyweight on the stadium show.
