A welterweight meeting between grappling phenoms Ben 'Funky' Askren and Demian Maia is currently targetted to serve as the main event of UFC Fight Night Kallang on October 26th. Speaking on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show yesterday, former Bellator MMA and ONE Championship welterweight best Ben Askren told how he would clash with two-time title chaser Demian Maia in the promotion's next trip to Singapore.
Askren, who was on the receiving end of the fastest knockout in UFC history against perennial contender Jorge Masvidal via a devastating five-second flying knee last time out at UFC 239, looks to finally get his faltering promotion career kick-started after a rather controversial bulldog choke victory over Robbie Lawler, and according to him, whoever leaves Singapore with the victory, will emerge as the best grappler the 170 pound division has to offer. Engaging over the past few days on Twitter, both men expressed their interest in the matchup, with Maia looking to extend his win streak to three.
The submission specialist, ended a three-fight slide which included three current or former champions, with a submission over the rising Lyman Good, before picking up a majority win against Anthony Rocco Martin.
With nineteen submission victories between the pair, this potential clash is truly a meeting of the best grapplers in the welterweight pile today. It's a clash of Askren's Olympic level wrestling versus Maia's grappling prowess and proficiency from back mount.
UFC Fight Night Kallang takes place from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on October 26th. with the aforementioned Askren vs. Maia bout expected to serve as the event headliner.
