A featherweight title matchup between current division kingpin, Alexander 'The Great' Volkanovski, and top-contender, Brian 'T-City' Ortega has been booked for UFC 260 on March 27th. with a location or venue for the showcase yet to be determined by the organization.
Attempting to score his second successful title defence, Australian powerhouse, Volkanovski features for the first time UFC 251 in July of last year in Abu Dhabi - where he scored a close split decision win over two-time foe, former featherweight best, Max 'Blessed' Holloway.
Earning his second crack at 145-pound gold in the UFC, Los Angeles born contender, Ortega displayed a breathtaking striking game opposite former title challenger, 'The Korean Zombie' Chan Sung Jung at UFC Fight Island 6 in October - to take a dominant 50-45 (x3) unanimous judging win. News of the featherweight title tilt was initially reported by ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani.
Hoping to score his tenth straight victory under the UFC's banner, City Kickboxing mainstay, Volkanovski has laid waste to each and every one of those opponents so far, taking notable victories over former title challenger, Chad 'Money' Mendes, and a unanimous judging triumph over all-time great, José Aldo 'Jr.' in Brazil back in May of 2019.
Claiming the undisputed featherweight throne, the 32-year-old New South Wales native took a comfortable unanimous judging win over the above-noted Holloway at UFC 244 in November of 2019, exacting a leg kick heavy approach to stifle the movement of the Hawaiin favourite.
Ortega, 29 - snapped an almost two-year hiatus in his win over Zombie in October. The victory also marked a return to winning ways for the talented grappler, following a fourth-round doctor's stoppage defeat to Holloway in a one-sided drubbing.
Adding Jung to an eye-catching winning résumé - Ortega has also scored prior Octagon wins against the likes of former lightweight best, Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, Renato Moicano, Clay Guida, and Diego Brandão.
UFC 260 takes place on March 27th. with the featherweight title pairing of Volkanovski and Ortega expected to serve in a co-headlining slot behind a heavyweight championship rematch between Stipe Miocic and Francis 'The Predator' Ngannou, however, that pairing has yet to be officially booked.
