Former two-division UFC world champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor has responded to Dustin Poirier's idea of re-running their 2014 clash in the coming months. The Dubliner replied to the Lafayette native on his official Twitter account late last night, goading the former interim champion and also making a request before he would "think" about facing the 30-year-old once more.
@TheNotoriousMMA - "I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro. You should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up. "McGregor's not next" Motherf**ker, It's McGregor always! McGregor is the goal! Always! Say that now and I'll think about it. #GoneIn90Seconds #NicCage #AJolie" In the tweet, McGregor refers to the pair's original meeting back at UFC 178, where the former featherweight and lightweight champion became the first to finish Poirier via strikes and also makes reference to the 2000 action movie 'Gone In 60 Seconds' which featured Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie.
Poirier featured at UFC 242 last Saturday in Abu Dhabi, suffering his first defeat in six outings, with a rear-naked choke from Khabib Nurmagomedov in the third round, unifying the lightweight titles. McGregor, on the other hand, has spent almost a year absent from the Octagon once again, with his last walk coming in October 2019. Similarly to Poirier, McGregor was also finished by Khabib, this time via a fourth-round neck crank or fulcrum choke at UFC 229, before a mass brawl between both camps ensued.
Tension was high ahead of Poirier and McGregor's 2014 clash with the Dubliner referring to Poirier's ability, or lack of in his opinion to withstand his power. "His chin is deteriorating, every single contest he get's in, he hits one knee, a gust of wind and he does the 'chicken dance'. Coming up against me that's not gonna be good, you know? I'm going to crack him with a jab and he's gonna wobble and I'm going to put him away early. It's gonna be a first-round 'KO' mark my words." Poirier admitted after the bout that maybe McGregor's trash-talking had found a way into his head. Before the matchup, Poirier said; "I've never disliked somebody that much that I've ever fought."
