Dustin Poirier Believes Conor McGregor Rematch "Makes Sense" After UFC 242 Loss

American Top Team standout Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier took to his official Twitter account this evening, to outline his possible fighting future after his UFC 242 lightweight championship unification loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier, who claimed the interim 155-pound strap via a rematch triumph over Max Holloway in April, now has another rematch in mind. The Lafayette native has called for a re-run with former two-weight UFC champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor, as he attempts to avenge his 2014 knockout loss to the Dubliner. @DustinPoirier - "I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point."
The 30-year-old suffered his first professional knockout to the hands of McGregor during their UFC 178 featured clash, which turned out to be his final foray at featherweight before his impressive surge of the lightweight rankings. With Khabib Nurmagomedov snapping Poirier's six-fight unbeaten run last weekend, the Dagestan native now holds wins over both Dustin and McGregor, and as mentioned in my recent 'UFC 242 - The Fallout' feature, a re-run to begin the winner's surge to the title once again, makes a lot of sense given Tony Ferguson's claim as the division's number one contender.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani in a recent sitdown, McGregor outlined some possible opponents for his Ultimate Fighting Championship return, mentioning how a matchup with Justin Gaethje was planned for July at Madison Square Garden before he suffered a hand injury. McGregor also told how he would be interested in fighting Poirier once more, if he got past Nurmagomedov; "If Dustin (Poirier) goes in and does it, Dustin."
With UFC Fight Night Vancouver headlined by the aforementioned Gaethje and Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone, it seems the winner of said bout may propose a clash with the SBG product before the end of the year. A meeting with either Poirier, Gaehtje or 'Cowboy' are hugely compelling clashes and incredibly dangerous propositions for McGregor's return.
