Aljamain Sterling claims biggest career win to date with decision over Renan Barao:

Big statement from 'The Funk Master'.
A Catchweight showdown between rising contender Aljamain Sterling and former Bantamweight champion and pound for pound top dog Renan 'The Baron' Barao takes place on the Prelims of UFC 214, in what may prove to be a huge bout for the future of both at 135lbs. Both men are looking to extend their undefeated run to two consecutively, with Sterling decisioning Augusto Mendes, while submission specialist Barao also secured a decision triumph over Phillipe Nover.

Our referee for this three round affair was the experienced Herb Dean. Sterling and Barao both tried with high kicks in the opening seconds of the first round, with the New Yorker flowing around the octagon nicely, with hands low inviting Barao forward. A slip from Sterling seen a scramble on the canvas, with Aljamain searching for a leg lock, but Sterling couldn't sit deep enough in order to lock it in, forcing him to let go, seeing Barao wind up in half guard. Renan was so far unsuccessful in his attempt to pass to full mount, as Sterling defending brilliantly from his back. A scramble momentarily presented an opportunity for an armbar or triangle, with Sterling unable to apply as the round came to it's conclusion.

The second round began with Aljamain pushing forward, landing a decent inside leg kick, before another scramble seen Barao lock up an anaconda, electing not to roll and letting go of the submission. Sterling then took the back of Barao, showing expert balance, as he once more attempted a heel hook, with Barao again giving up his back. Sterling began to posture up as of instructions from Matt Serra and Ray Longo, really punishing Barao with slashing elbows, before another scramble created a triangle chance for 'The Baron'. As the remaining seconds ran down, Sterling postured up in stacked guard laying down some good shots before the end of the round.

The third and final round of this one began in strong style for Sterling, landing a big front kick clean on the chin of Barao, stunning the Rio native for a second, before creating another takedown chance as he pushed to clinch against the fence. Herb Dean separated both due to inactivity in the clinch, Dean was once again forced to intervene, as Sterling began to pick his shots on a fast fading Renan Barao. The Brazilian closed the fight with a good trip, before taking the back of Barao and slamming the New York native on his head. The judges in attendance granted a thoroughly deserved unanimous decision victory to Aljamain Sterling.
