Patrick Cummins out points New York's Gian Villante:

Big win for Patrick Cummins.
Light Heavyweight contenders Patrick Cummins and Gian Villante meet at UFC Fight Night Long Island in yet another grappler versus striker meeting, with Cummins a sure fire wrestler and Villante, one of the heaviest hitters at 205lbs. Both men have predicted early stoppages, with Cummins expecting a win inside three minutes, while Gian has his eyes set on yet another "face plant" finish over Cummins. We can expect the winner of this one to just about creep into the top 10 rankings in the Light Heavyweight divison.

Referee 'Big' John McCarthy made his first main card walk of the night, with Villante stuffing an early takedown attempt from Patrick Cummins, landing some significant hand fists early. Villante then tagged Cummins expertly stumbling the Florida native, before 'Big' John called a pause in the action after spotting a clash of heads between both men. Villante smashed his right leg into the body of Cummins as he angled away well, with Cummins so far a stationary target for Gian. A significant amount of claret was pouring from the eye of Cummins, who wrapped up Villante in the clinch at the fence, smartly recovering.

Villante came rushing out in the second's early stages, with Cummins finding his range well, but so far was unable to get the New York striker to the mat. Quiet second round so far for Villante, with Boca Rotan grappler Cummins having the most success in terms of striking. The fight is most certainly for the taking heading into the third.

Keith Trimble wasn't at all satisfied in the corner of Gian Villante heading into the third, as Patrick Cummins looked to land that short left hook, with Villante finally reverting to that right hand which almost stopped Cummins in the first round. Cummins was undoubtedly pushing the pace halfway though the third and final round, finding a home for that slashing right hook. John McCarthy seperated both men after a stalemate in the clinch, as they go the distance in a difficult matchup all round. Deserved split decision for Florida's Cummins.
