Conor McGregor Criticises Dustin Poirier, Family For Celebrating UFC 264 Victory Following Injury

Former two-weight UFC champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor has criticized former interim gold holder and three-time foe, Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier as well as his family for celebrating his UFC 264 victory back in July, given the fact McGregor was dealing with a leg injury whilst still in the Octagon.

Headlining UFC 264 back in July, McGregor met with former interim titleholder, Poirier in a trilogy rubber match, attempting to avenge a January knockout defeat to the Lafayette native.

Spending the majority of the latter stages of the opening round on his back following a failed guillotine attempt at the fence, McGregor found himself on the receiving end of ground strikes from Poirier, as he attempted to mount his own offense.

Upon a separation, induced by Poirier who alleged McGregor was holding his glove in order to pull him into his guard and toward upkicks, the pair exchanged on the feet with 20 seconds remaining in the round.

With just 10 seconds remaining in the first round, McGregor fell to his backside at the Octagon fence as the pair missed with a pair of counter straight hands. Upon the conclusion of the frame, it became apparent McGregor had suffered an injury to his left leg. 

Diagnosed with a fracture to his left tibia the following day, McGregor underwent a surgical procedure to address the injury, and is still currently recovering in the 13-weeks since -- with his Octagon return briefly outlined for a year's time. 

Reflecting on Saturday night's WBC heavyweight trilogy boxing match between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, McGregor praised Fury's performance, who scored an eleventh round knockout win, before also firing barbs toward Poirier and his family for the way they celebrated Poirier's UFC 264 victory, whilst he was injured Octagon-side.

"Great fight that," McGregor tweeted. "Both warriors, both winners. Hard to not be impressed with Deontay (Wilder) there. Against the much larger man and almost got it done. Great fight. 40lb's in weight difference is A LOT. Fair play both men there, very enjoyable fights they have had together. Respect."

"Their skill levels are unique but very close," McGregor tweeted. "A great heavyweight trilogy that was. I love when it gets set for certain and both have an honorable showing. Not the fam (family) in the ring fake celebrating after a freak injury etc etc you know the gig. God bless the real in this world."

"Congrats Tyson and Paris," McGregor tweeted. "Me and Dee are so happy for you and the kids. Congrats Deontay and Telli also. Was great meeting you guys recently. A real proud showing that was, and could have went either way. Amazing! Happy Sunday now today with the cheddar and the memory's God bless.'

While McGregor continues to recover from his surgical procedure, Lafayette puncher, Poirier is slated to headline UFC 269 on December 11. -- challenging current undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira for gold.
