Duke Roufus Claims Cowboy Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis II Is Verbally Agreed
Dave Mandel Duke Roufus has confirmed that Pettis and Cowboy have verbally agreed to meet once more. |
Roufusport leader Duke Roufus has announced that his student, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone are expected to re-run their 2013 battle, after the promotion offered the recently faltering pair a rematch. Milwaukee based Pettis recently made the move to welterweight, and made good on his divisional bow with a knockout of Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson, but suffered a broken foot on his way to a clear-cut decision defeat to the returning Nate Diaz at UFC 241.
Veteran striker Donald Cerrone on the other hand, made a blistering start to his lightweight title re-run at the beginning of the year, stopping the promising Alexander Hernandez via a patented head-kick, before exacting a five round beating on Al Iaquinta. The Colorado native has similarly ran into poor form as of late, dropping stoppage defeats to long-time #1 contender Tony Ferguson and then the surging Justin Gaethje.
Pettis, who stopped Cerrone via a liver kick during his successful run to championship gold in 2013, has agreed to face the former Jackson-Wink MMA trainee once more, according to head coach Duke Roufus. "It has been a long time in the making. The @ufc offered @showtimepettis a rematch with @cowboycerrone. Donald (Cerrone) and Anthony (Pettis) have professionally reached out personally to one another and have agreed to fight each other. Both guys have given MMA some epic performances fighting all the top fighters in the sport. We are just waiting on a date to dance."
Cerrone and Pettis have both swapped weight divisions over the last calendar year, with Pettis testing welterweight waters for the first time, while BMF Ranch owner Cerrone has returned to lightweight, a division where he holds some tremendous success. Both men have competed on the professional scene for over thirteen years, amassing a staggering fifty eight wins between them. Pettis hold notable victories over Benson Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, Rafael dos Anjos, Charles Oliveira, Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and Jim Miller, while fellow stoppage artist 'Cowboy' Cerrone has toppled the likes of Melvin Guillard, Edson Barboza, Matt Brown, Patrick Cote, Eddie Alvarez , Mike Perry and 'Cowboy' Oliveira.
