The situation surrounding the UFC lightweight championship just got a whole lot more interesting.

Undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib 'The Eagle' Nurmagomedov is currently stranded in his native Dagestan and excluded from UFC 249 on April 18th. In steps Justin Gaethje to tackle Tony Ferguson on two-weeks notice, with an interim championship now instated by the organization. With top-five contenders gunning for an opportunity at undisputed gold in the coming quarter, Dustin Poirier wants to earn his second undisputed title tilt with a rematch against Conor McGregor, at 170-pounds.

Poirier, who dropped his first defeat in six outings in an unsuccessful attempt to unify the lightweight crowns against Khabib last September - wants to run things back with former-foe, McGregor. The Lafayette fan-favourite was tentatively booked to clash with rising contender, Dan 'The Hangman' Hooker in the main event of UFC Fight Night San Diego in May, but it now seems Poirier has switched his attentions to a certain, 'Notorious' one.

Taking to his official Twitter account on Monday evening, Poirier explored the option of finally securing a rematch with McGregor at welterweight, after his 2014 knockout loss at 145-pounds.

"Me and Conor (McGregor) at 170(-pounds) then?"

The American Top-Team mainstay featured against McGregor back at UFC 178 in 2014, losing via an opening-round knockout during a heated period between the then featherweight contenders. Former lightweight and featherweight champion, like Poirier, also dropped his most recent defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov, but returned to the win column at UFC 246 in January with a forty-second knockout of veteran striker, Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone.

McGregor was tentatively expected to make his second Octagon walk of the year against the previously noted Gaethje at an event this summer, but with the Arizonian preoccupied with Ferguson, the opportunity of facing the #2 ranked Poirier, is a tie which would certainly determine the next in line for a lightweight title expedition following April 18th's. interim title clash.
