The UFC has yet to secure a location or venue for their upcoming outing on May 9th., but they've confirmed the event will be billed as the cancelled April 18th. event, UFC 249.
The promotion was forced to cancel the event on April 18th. after organisation head-honcho, Dana White revealed how executive's from Disney, and partners, ESPN, had asked him to "stand down", amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. White, who announced plans to host fights on a private island, is planning on landing the Octagon on May 9th. as well as other events on a weekly basis. News of the event moniker was first reported by ESPN writer, Brett Okamoto.
The April 18th. event was scheduled to hold a headlining bout between undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov and perennial contender, Tony Ferguson, with gold up for spoils, in a fifth scheduled pairing of the two rivals. Nurmagomedov was then removed from the event after he was left stranded in his native Dagestan after travel restrictions implemented due to the coronavirus pandemic halted his return to the United States.
Dominance MMA stablemate, Justin Gaethje has since been installed into a headliner with Ferguson, with an interim lightweight championship also introduced for the newly promoted UFC 249 event. A bantamweight title pairing of Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz has also been confirmed. Expected to open a triple treat of title tilts, a featherweight title bout between Amanda Nunes and Felicia Spencer has fallen out with Nunes revealing how she wants to complete a full training camp before competing. It's believed the pairing of Nunes and Spencer may be rebooked for a June event.
