UFC middleweight contender, Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza is set to undergo surgery to repair a fractured humerus in his upper right arm, following a submission defeat to compatriot, Andre Muniz on Saturday night on the preliminary card of UFC 262.

Souza, who battled Dana White Contender Series alum, Muniz in the night's featured preliminary bout, suffered a late armbar defeat to his fellow Brazilian -- after suffering a fracture of his right humerus four minutes into the opening round of their matchup.

Locked in an awkwardly positioned armbar in his opening round, an audible snap could be heard during the broadcast as Muniz transitioned to a bellied down position, with Souza's upper right arm trapped between Muniz' underarm and midsection, resulting in the fracture.

Posting an update from a medical facility on Sunday, Souza confirmed that he was set to undergo a surgical procedure today, before thanking his fans for their concern.

"Thank you all for the support and concern," Souza wrote on his official Instagram. "I'm in the hospital with my wife now and my surgery will be tomorrow. Thank you @ufc for all the support I'm having here. #UFC262 #UFC #RonaldoJacare"

The defeat came as Souza's fourth consecutively, following a prior knockout loss to Kevin Holland at UFC 256 in December last, and a pair of unanimous decision blemishes to current light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz, and an April 2019 judging defeat to Jack Hermansson.

A former Strikeforce middleweight champion, as well as a staggering ten-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist at the ADCC and World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Souza's most recent professional mixed martial arts victory, came in the form of a UFC 230 knockout win over former middleweight champion, Chris Weidman. Saturday's submission loss to Muniz came as the first time Souza had been submitted in his professional mixed martial arts career.
