Yoel Romero focused on victory rather than champion status at UFC 248

UFC 248 marks the fourth occasion in which perennial middleweight contender, Yoel Romero is scheduled in a meeting for Octagon gold. The Cuban wrestler faces undisputed division best, Israel Adesanya - but according to the veteran, victory means so much more than champion status on Saturday night.
The Olympic silver medalist spoke with Colin Crandall from the MMA Power Hour at Thursday's Media Day - where Romero explained how victory against Adesanya is paramount, and takes sole focus rather than the spoils up for grabs.
"I'm not thinking too much about the belt," Romero said. "I'm thinking about victory. I put all my focus on victory."
The longtime top-contender has managed an incredible eleven knockout victories in his seventeen fight career - evident of his evolution in the standup aspect of mixed-martial-arts. In recent outings, we've seen very little utilisation of offensive wrestling from the freestyle practitioner - something Romero explained how a realisation of variety is needed for success in MMA.
"It's MMA, I've been very involved with all different martial arts," Romero explained. "I realised you have to mix everything to be successful in the Octagon."
