Dustin Poirier returns, meets Dan Hooker at UFC San Diego in May

A high-stakes lightweight pairing between former interim champion, Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier - and recent hometown victor, Dan 'The Hangman' Hooker is expected to serve as the main event of UFC Fight Night San Diego on May 16th. - per an initial report by MMA Junkie writer, Mike Bohn.

Former interim 155-pound gold-holder, Poirier (25-6), will make the Octagon walk for the first time since his unification title defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September last year. The American Top Team staple recently underwent hip surgery - and during the rehabilitation process, was rumoured to meet with Nate Diaz in a rescheduled bout. Before the submission loss to Khabib - Poirier had managed four straight victories, over former world champions, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway. The Lafayette striker has scored thirteen knockout wins over the course of his thirty-two fight career.

Kiwi fan-favourite, Hooker (20-8), recently edged out Roufusport's Paul Felder in a Fight of the Year contender in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand two weeks ago. The 30-year-old extended his win streak to three in the process, following a return to winning-ways against Al Iaquinta, and James Vick last year. The Eugene Bareman trainee is renowned for his ability to withstand punishment, losing via knockout just once over the course of his eleven-year professional career. Hooker earned the #5 rank in the lightweight ranks via his recent win over Felder.

UFC Fight Night San Diego is expected to take place on May 16th. from the Pechanga Arena - and features a flyweight bout between Ariane Lipski, and Luana Carolina. In a 185-pound matchup, Punahele Soriano takes on Anthony Hernandez, while at 125-pounds, Courtney Casey tackles Lara Procopio.
