Woodley and 'Wonderboy' II set for UFC 209:
UFC Welterweight king Tyron 'The Chosen One' Woodley will once again defend his title against karate expert Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson, at UFC 209 in March at the T-Mobile Arena. Woodley and 'Wonderboy' met at the monstrous UFC 205 card in Madison Square Garden, where both men fought to a majority draw. Woodley as expected utilised his wrestling background and explosive striking to fend off Thompson, who stuck to his phenomenal kickboxing and karate background. This rematch was expected for some time since the fallout of UFC 205, with the winner, if we establish one, expected to defend against Brazilian grappler Demian Maia sometime in the future.
Woodley and Thompson are expected to headline the card, with Dagestan sambo specialist Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson playing second fiddle in the co-main event for the Interim UFC Lightweight title, due to the lengthy absence of Conor McGregor who along with Dee Devlin are expecting their first child. The Interim aspect of the Lightweight clash seems bizarre, almost similar to the Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis bout back at UFC 206, where the originally slated bout was to occur over three rounds, before later being rebooked to establish an Interim UFC Featherweight champion. With the Nurmagomedov and Ferguson battle, we can just expect this to be a Lightweight title eliminator to establish who faces McGregor for the title, instead of introducing yet another Interim, almost valueless and division damaging 'title'.
