Colby Covington Calls For Title Rematch Against Kamaru Usman

With a meeting against top-contender, Jorge 'Gamebred' Masvidal on the horizon in July - UFC welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman is seemingly preoccupied. This, however, hasn't prevented recent title chaser, Colby Covington, from campaigning for a rematch with bitter-rival, Usman, upon his eventual Octagon return.
The polarizing American Top Team staple - suffered a dramatic fifth-round knockout defeat to Usman at UFC 245 in December, but due to many factors, including an apparent controversial, early stoppage from referee, Marc Goddard - the brash Covington, has called for an immediate championship rematch. Covington, 31, is still recuperating from a jaw injury he suffered against Henri Hooft trainee, Usman, but is expected to return sooner than the originally expected timeline. Along with the "early stoppage" Covington explained how Usman faked an unintentional groin-strike in the second round of their heated affair.
Speaking with MMA Fighting on Monday evening, Covington outlined why he should be granted an immediate rematch when he returns to active-competition.
"I went out there and beat up, 'Marty Fakenewsman' for twenty-four minutes the ref (Marc Goddard) had to call the fight on a fake stoppage, a bulls**t stoppage," Covington said. "Where I was completely coherent and still in the fight, and he just blatantly stopped the fight, after there was a foul, too. He's hitting me in the back of the head four times and he blatantly calls the fight, because he knows he doesn't want it to go to the judges' scorecards cause I could win. I was fighting against two people that night. Against 'Marc Not So Goddard', and 'Marty Fakenewsman'. Why would I hang my head about that?"
"I went out there and fought my ass off. I went through the championship rounds and people saw how tough I was, and they know who the best welterweight in the world is, and that's Colby 'Chaos' Covington."
As well as the early stoppage, Covington claims that Usman managed to hoax an illegal groin-strike in the second-round, resulting in a brief stoppage in the action-packed pairing.
"In the second round, that's a huge momentum shift when I kick him in the liver and 'Marty Fakenewsman' says, 'oh it's a nut shot', and he looks for Marc Goddard because he's literally about to fold up because his organs are shutting down on him, and he wants to quit. 'Oh, Marc Goddard, save me, nut shot, nut shot.' Give him a couple minutes to recover. That's a huge momentum shift."
Covington, who seems more than willing to call a halt to his professional mixed-martial-arts career until warranted another meeting for welterweight gold, may see the division move on without him if he chooses to do just that. Usman has a date with BMF champion, Masvidal at UFC 252 in July - while former division best, Tyron Woodley returns at UFC Fight Night London in March, as he looks to end the surge of perennial contender, Leon 'Rocky' Edwards.
