A potential lightweight title-eliminator between former two-weight world champion, Conor McGregor, and surging contender, Justin 'The Highlight' Gaethje is currently targeted to feature at an event this summer, according to ESPN's, Ariel Helwani.
Speaking on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show on Monday evening, the reporter revealed that the Dubliner's representatives are currently in preliminary talks to meet with Arizonian, Gaethje, this summer as the three-fight riser remains the current front runner to face 'The Notorious' one.
McGregor, 31, recently snapped a fifteen-month hiatus from the Octagon back in January at UFC 246, as he lodged a blistering forty-second knockout win over former lightweight title challenger, Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone in a welterweight showdown. The SBG mainstay has spoken of a busy schedule for the year, beginning with his successful return against Cerrone, and ending with a lightweight championship clash against either former-foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov, or UFC 249 challenger, Tony Ferguson.
Former WSOF lightweight best, Gaethje, recovered from a knockout defeat to Dustin Poirier in April of 2018, to manage three straight knockouts over James Vick, Edson Barboza, and the aforementioned, Cerrone. The 31-year-old striker was recently invited to the Octagon by UFC Fight Night Auckland winner, Dan Hooker, but it seems the promotion is currently planning on booking a highly-anticipated, well overdue matchup between McGregor and Gaethje.
