Immediate championship rematches in the UFC are often a hotly debated topic. This time around - the rematching of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway is a bout we can all agree is entirely deserved. Holloway dropped his featherweight title in the co-main event of a triple-threat title tie UFC 245 event - with Volkanovski exacting a picture-perfect gameplan on his way to a unanimous decision shutout.
Off the back of the victory, the newly minted featherweight champion has been granted a title-defence on home soil. News of the pairing was later reported by The Daily Telegraph.
According to UFC president, Dana White, the promotion is currently targetting a rematch between the two featherweight strikers for June - at UFC 251 in Perth, Australia. In an interview with TSN's, Aaron Bronsteter, White confirmed the rematch scheduling - as well as a handful of other matchups for the coming month.
"Yes. Yes, that fights happening. I don't know if the deals are signed and in, or any of that stuff but, yeah," White said when asked if the rematch would take place in June.
Along with the confirmation of Volkanovski vs. Holloway II, White also remarked on matchups between, Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal at UFC 252, Henry Cejudo and José Aldo at UFC 250, and finally, a highly anticipated featherweight clash between former title challenger, Brian Ortega and Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 249.
News of the rematch follows Australian-born, Volanovski's, claims that the 145-pound division was without a "clear" number-one contender in January. The 31-year-old questioned whether Holloway deserved an immediate rematch following his one-sided win - and called for the previously mentioned Ortega and Magomedsharipov to establish a clear challenger, as well as Chan Sung Jung.
Before his championship defeat in December - Holloway had lodged successful featherweight title defences against José Aldo, Brian Ortega, and Frankie Edgar.
UFC 251 is expected to take place on June 6th. from Perth, Australia, with the RAC Arena playing host to the event. Along with the featherweight title rematch, a double bill of championship meetings is begun with a flyweight pairing of the dominant Valentina Shevchenko, and Scotland's perennial contender, Joanne Calderwood.
