Former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman has undergone successful surgery after he suffered a horrific leg break at UFC 261 on Saturday night, just eighteen seconds into his main card rematch with Uriah Hall.

Weidman, throwing his first significant strike of the contest, attempted a right low kick against Hall in the opening exchange, with the Spanish Town native partially checking the strike just below the knee. Immediately breaking his leg on impact, Weidman stepped back onto the broken right leg, before collapsing to the canvas in agonizing pain as referee, Herb Dean waved off the fight.

The Baldwin native's right leg was immediately placed into a compression sleeve as per the UFC broadcast trio of Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier, before he was placed on a stretcher and taken to a medical facility ahead of a surgical procedure on Sunday morning. UFC president, Dana White confirmed post-event that Weidman was in a stable condition ahead of surgery the following morning.

Posting an update as well as a picture of her husband recovering in hospital, Weidman's wife, Marivi Weidman described the incident as "horrible".

"Well, that was horrible," Marivi Weidman wrote on her official Instagram. "Freak things happen in life and plans get crushed. It's been a lonnnggg day but so happy. to finally see this man of mine post-surgery. Everything went well thank you Lord! Very thankful for the medical staff, UFC family @danawhite @reedharrisufc #allieraimondo, our management team @vaynersports @sarahzemonek and our family and friends here rallying to help with the kids."

"My heart breaks for my husband because I know the work and dedication that he puts into his training every day and the great man that he is, so I only want the best for him. While this absolutely sucks in the moment and for some weeks to come, we are completely overwhelmed by the love and support we have far and wide and are very aware how blessed we are."

"All of that overpowers the awfulness of this situation. We are blown away by our friends and family offering to hop on flights to come help us without hesitation. We are so grateful and love you all!! It's been a crazy year so far but us Weidman's are a force and covered in Grace and Mercy every day! We were reminded this year how precious each day is and I am so thankful to be spending another day on earth next to my love even if it's in a hospital room far from home. #teamweidman"

Whilst details are yet to emerge on which bone in Weidman's right leg was broken, the injury is almost identical to that suffered by fellow former middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg during his championship challenge rematch against Weidman back at UFC 168 in December of 2013, as Weidman checked a second round leg kick.
