Conor McGregor 'Thinking' About Buying Manchester United Amid European Super League Collapse

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor has tweeted tonight, that he's "thinking" about purchasing football club, Manchester United amid the recent controversy surrounding plans to compete in a breakaway European Super League, and the resignation of the club's CEO, Ed Woodward.

McGregor, who recently seen his UFC 264 lightweight rubber match with former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier, score a July 10th. T-Mobile Arena date, will make his second Octagon appearance of the year following a second-round knockout loss to the Louisiana native at UFC 257 on 'Fight Island' in January. 

Controversy has been rife within the football community over the weekend, when plans for a breakaway European Super League were unveiled on Saturday, which would see six Premier League teams; Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool compete in a breakaway league as founding members alongside Spanish sides, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid, as well as Italian trio, Juventus, A.C. Milan, and Internazionale. 

The breakaway format was denounced by fans from each club across social media, with both FIFA and UEFA warning the founding member clubs involved that they could be removed from their domestic competitions, as well as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, and their players could be banned from competing in sanctioned international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the European Championships. 

With tension reaching boiling point tonight ahead of a Premier League match tonight between Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge,  protestors blocked the Chelsea team bus from entering the stadium. 

In news reported by multiple outlets, Chelsea was officially preparing documentation requesting their withdraw from the European Super League, with the likes of Manchester City, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, reported to follow suit. 

For Manchester United, reports emerged confirming that their CEO, Ed Woodward would be resigning from his position amid the backlash of their attempt to form the European Super League, with many also calling for the club's owners, Joel and Avram Glazer to sell the club.

While the claim may be in jest, McGregor reacted to the news, claiming he's weighing up the option of purchasing the club. 

"Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying Manchester United!" McGregor wrote on his official Twitter account. "What do you think?"
 

According to Forbes, Manchester United football club is currently valued in the region of $3.8 billion and $4.1 billion.
