What a matchup this would be! |
With current division kingpin Conor McGregor absent, a former opponent and a top contender lie waiting in the wings for a chance to challenge 'The Notorious' for the Lightweight crown. Unbeaten since 2012, #2 ranked 155lbs competitor Tony 'El Cucuy' Ferguson has once more challenged fan favourite Nate Diaz to a contest, urging the Stockton native to follow the Diaz motto and "Don't be scared homie". After conquering Brazil's finest Edson Barboza and after a D'arce win over Lando Vannata, former champ Rafael Dos Anjos awaited the grappler, and was swept away with ease via a decision win. Younger Diaz brother Nate was both successful and unsuccessful at Welterweight against McGregor, and after the latter UFC 202 bout, explained how he wouldn't be stepping back into the octagon unless McGregor was standing across from him, although the tough competitor may be hugely interested in Ferguson's proposal. After a UFC 209 Interim Lightweight championship fallout against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ferguson was left frustrated and opponent-less. Many believe that Ferguson and Diaz should compete for a chance to face McGregor, including the Crumlin native's manager Audie Attar, who believes the emerging winner would definitely entice his client back into the octagon in a title defence, after his expected boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.
