Gegard Mousasi picks up controversial doctor stoppage win:
Gegard Mousasi awarded doctor stoppage TKO victory: |
Dan Miragliotta was the man in the middle tonight as the first round opened with a good right hand from Mousasi followed by a quick jab. Weidman returned a body kick of his own a shot with an early single leg, impressive start from Chris Weidman. A deep guillotine was defended well by Mousasi as the fight returned to the feet. Another single leg resulted in a takedown for Weidman as Mousasi once more recovered quickly. A double leg attempt from Chris was defended well by Gegard as Weidman stung him with a hook. A slip from Mousasi seen Weidman finish the round on top. First round to Chris Weidman.
The second of three scheduled rounds began with a good shot from Mousasi, hurting Chris and pinning him against the fence, before then looking for a takedown of his own. Weidman finished another takedown, but fell into a front head lock as a scramble ensued. Big trouble for Mousasi after Chris mounted him, but a beautiful sweep from Gegard seen him get back to his feet. Then Mousasi landed two knees in the clinch, with Miragliotta calling a stoppage in the action for the second knee, before the replays confirmed that the knee was in fact legal. Bizzarly Weidman was afforded the recovery time, even though the knee was judged as legal. Mark Rattner confirmed to Joe Rogan that the doctor shouldn't be in the octagon and the bout should be over. Controversy is never too far from the NYSAC recently! Dan Miragliotta called the fight, awarding the fight to Gegard Mousasi via doctor stoppage. An intriguing contest ruined by a complete lack of knowledge regarding rules.
