Chelsea V West Ham United: 15/8/16

Antonio Conte began his tenure as Chelsea coach against Slaven Bilic's West Ham at Stamford Bridge. Conte, taking over form Gus Hiddink who took over on a caretaker contact after the departure of José Mourinho. Conte played a 4-5-1 formation with new signing N'Golo Kanté handed his debut since his move from current Premier League champions Leicester City. Conte elected to leave fellow summer signing Michy Batshuayi on the bench rather than partner him up top with rumoured to be unhappy, Diego Costa. The 23 year old Belgium, comes with a huge reputation, after a fantastic season with Marseille in Ligue 1, finding the net 17 times in the competitions. Croatian boss Slavan Bilic handed debuts to Artur Masuaku after the French full back completed his £6 million move from Olympiakos, Havard Nordtveit who joins from Borussia Monchengladbach and £20 million pound man Andre Ayew started in a front three with Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia. French star Dimitri Payet was reserved to the bench, where Besiktas loanee Gokhan Tore oppucied also. Former Valencia winger Sofiane Feghouli was not named in the starting eleven or on the bench, since the Algerian's move from Spain.

Chelsea began the first half in an attacking manner wiht Diego Costa drawing James Collins into giving away a free kick in the opening 5 mintues. Free kick expert Willian stood over the ball but Andy Carroll defended well from the back. N'Golo Kanté picked up an early yellow card as Anthony Taylor was holding no prisoners in the opening 2 and a half minutes. Thibaut Courtois was awarded a free kick after he was impeded after a delivery from a set piece. Mark Noble then miscued as Courtois easily gathered. Chelsea then counter attacked but impressive full back Michiel Antonio cut out the danger. Diego Costa then made a surging run into the area where James Collins cleared the danger. Seribian defender Branislav Ivanovic produced a good save from the Spaniard Adrian as the former Betis keeper got down low at his near post. Belgian maestro Eden Hazard then fired over from range as the former Lille winger looked to improve on a poor campaign last year. Brazilian midfielder Oscar then looked for his compatriot Willian but Welsh centre half James Collins was there again. Anthony Taylor then waved away penalty claims after New Zealand centre half Winston Reid body checked Oscar inside the area, where many referees would have awarded the penalty. Diego Costa received a yellow card for his protests. Chelsea were dominating possession for the last 10 minutes of play as West Ham's best chance would be on the counter attack, or use Andy Carroll's height to set up an attack up top. Belgian winger Eden Hazard then went very close to opening the scoring but his effort just skimmed past Adrian's post. Ghana winger Andre Ayew seemed to pull his thigh muscle whilst chasing Hazard as his debut looked to be prematurely over. Turkish winger and former Chelsea man Gokhan Tore replaced the former Marseille and Swansea man. Adrian then got down low to gather Diegor Costa's effort with 35 minutes gone. Costa then fired wide from the edge of the area as Chelsea were looking the more promising side. Eden Hazard looked a completely different player than last season as it looked like the summers European Championships revitalised the Belgian. Diego Costa won Chelsea another free kick and this one was in Willian range and Adrian had to be on his toes as he tipped it over the bar for a corner as the first half ended with both sides level.

Chelsea got off to the perfect start in the second half as Costa tested Adrian, before Antonio brought down Cesar Azpilicueta to give away a penalty. Eden Hazard stepped up and smashed home form the spot to give the 'Blues' the lead. Willian then found Hazard with a clever cut back into the box but the latter's touch let him down as Antonio cleared. Sam Byram was introduced by Slavan Bilic for the man who gave away the penalty, Michiel Antonio. Masuaku closed down Oscar as the Brazilian won a corner for his side which ultimately came to nothing. Willian came very close to finding Chelsea a precious second but Adrian got down very well to get his right hand to it to turn it found the post. Slavan Bilic looked to French superstar and last seasons 'Hammer of the Year' Dimitri Payet to offer them a different outlet as he replaced Havard Nordtveit. Costa then went in hard on Adrian and looked catch the keeper on his ankle, West Ham fans called for the polarising forward to be dismissed by Anthony Taylor but the referee refused. Mark Noble won West Ham a free kick out wide, but Payet's delivery was dealt with easily. Andy Carroll then won his side a free kick in a very good position for West Ham as Dimitri Payet sttod over the ball from around 23 yards out. Payet's free kick was deflected behind for a corne, and then from the corner, James Collins scored past Courtois after a scramble in the 6 yard box. The ball fell to the Welsh defender and he buried it with a half volley finish. Antonio Conte introduced Pedro to proceedings for Willian with 10 minutes to play. With just over 5 minutes to play, Chelsea handed Michy Batshauyi his debut as the exciting Belgian forward replaced Oscar for the final moments. Victor Moses also replaced Eden Hazard as he was introduced against the team he was on loan at last campaign. Michy Batshuyi, with just 2 minutes to go, found Diego Costa and the Spanish striker set himslef from 20 odd yards let fly and found the bottom corner to bag a deserving win for Antonio Conte on his debut. A late chance fell to to Andy Carroll but a mix up behind him and Enner Valencia seen the chance vanish as Chelsea held on for all 3 points and got off to a winning start under the Antonio Conte era.
