What next for Robbie Lawler?
The last time Robbie Lawler lost in the UFC, the Coconut Creek native went on a tear, winning 5 in a row defending the UFC Welterweight title twice against Rory MacDonald in an absolute barn burner and against Carlos Condit in another 25 minute brawl. Lawler was touted to face the victor of Conor McGregor's and Nate Diaz's bout but St. Louis favourite Tyron 'The Chosen One' Woodley shocked the crowd at UFC 201 in Atlanta when he knocked, a normally durable Lawler stiff and became the new UFC Welterweight champ. Many contributed Lawler's defeat to a build up of miles in his last two bouts against Rory McDonald and Carlos Condit. Woodley, known for his brutal knockout power would need to put an end to the contest in the opening round or two and managed to do exactly that. Lawler, was many people's favourite to defend against #1 contender Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson but after Woodley's victory, 'The Chosen One' has been challenged by Thompson to a battle at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden. So where does this leave Lawler. Well, Lawler could reignite his rivalry with the returning Nick Diaz or take a super fight with legend Georges St. Pierre, many others believe Lawler should battle Carlos Condit after their close fought title fight with many pundits and MMA insiders believing the latter won their 5 round fight. Any of these fights would prove to be very difficult for Lawler but in my opinion, a clever option is a bout against former Welterweight King GSP after the Canadian's 3 year hiatus from the fight game and 'ring rust' may be a factor for St. Pierre.
