Hull City V Manchester United: 27/8/16
Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan welcomed his former side to the KCOM Stadium in the third game of each sides campaign. Hull and United are both coming off 2-0 victories in the league with Hull beating Swansea in Wales last time out and United comfortably overthrowing Southamptom at Old Trafford. Both sides also went unchanged with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic keeping their places in Mourinho's side. It was a lightning start of intent by United as they looked to attack quickly with Valencia finding Ibrahimovic in the area and the big Swede somehow managed to hook the ball from behind him and flick the ball over his head but nobody was on the end of it. Ibrahimovic then went close to opening the scoring as Anthony Martial cut inside and crossed but the big Swede's header just went over the bar. Marouane Fellaini then brought down Diomande on the edge of the box with a clumsy challenge and Robert Snodgrass stepped up to take it. The former Norwich man went very close but it just crept wide of a grateful De Gea's post and wide. With just over 35 minutes gone, Hull looked very good on the counter attack while United were looking to the flanks for their basis of attack. Juan Mata them with a brilliant step-over seen his driven pass find Wayne Rooney and the captain's shot was blocked on the line, as the England man shouted for handball. Then just before half time, Zlatan was on the end of a Wayne Rooney free kick and his heavy touch ended a chance as his backheel attempt hit the side netting before he was adjudged offside.
Hull City got us underway for the second half with Snodgrass looking in quite some pain after his collision with the post in the first period. Robert Snodgrass immediately fell to the ground in agony and was replaced by last weeks hero Shaun Maloney. United started the second half with a much higher tempo as they looked to take the lead. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was going to be United's first introduction as he replaced Anthony Martial with a half an hour to go. Ibrahimovic then seen his deflected shot go use wide for a corner to United. Paul Pogba tried his luck from range but Jakupovic seen it over. Juan Mata made way for the exciting Marcus Rashford as United looked to find something up front. Tom Huddlestone then seen his deflected shot go wide of De Gea's post. Paul Pogba then seen his free kick go well wide as United were desperate to take the lead with 12 minutes left to play in the second half. Marcus Rashford then went close inside the area after bending the ball towards the far post, only for Jakupovic to get a hand to it. Abel Hernandez was then replaced by defender Harry Maguire as Mike Phelan looked to sure up his defence and take a point with him. Paul Pogba then went close with another long range shot but Hull were surviving. Mkhitaryan then tried his luck but it was straight at Jakupovic. Curtis Davis was handed the man of the match award with just 2 minutes to play at the KCOM Stadium. Then with moments left, Wayne Rooney skipped past his man on the touch line and picked out Marcus Rashford who tapped home to steal all three points for José Mourinho's side.
