McGregor battled infection before Nate Diaz fight at UFC 196
Conor McGregor faced a huge battle before he even stepped into the octagon against Nate Diaz after his coach John Kavanagh confirmed the rumours that McGregor was suffering from a staph infection. Speaking on Jon Anik's and Kenny Florian's podcast, Florian asked the Irish native if the murmurs he was hearing were true to which Kavanagh admitted were. Interestingly, Kavanagh refused to blame the infection for McGregor's loss, but told how his training camp for the second bout between the pair had been 'flawless' and it was as 'perfect' as could be. McGregor was certainly winning the fight until he 'gassed' half way through the second round, after winning the first, and Diaz capitalised to use his longer reach and lit Conor up before the Irishman shot for a double leg before being submitted via an expertly applied rear naked choke by the Gracie Ju-Jitsu fighter. Both fighters will now have an entire camp to expertly prepare for each other, and more time for McGregor to adapt to the weight may see an entirely different outcome the second time round.
