Hull City V Leicester City: 13/8/16

Reigning Premier League Champions Leicester City began their defence of the title away to newly promoted Hull City. Mike Phelan, Hull's caretaker manager was not guaranteed a full time contract with the 'Tigers' was under pressure with his side making very few moves in the transfer window. Ahmed Musa and Spanish defender Luis Hernandez made their Premier League debuts with fellow signings Nampaly Mendy not featured due to personal reasons and Bartosz Kaputska on the bench. Former Birmingham Coty winger Damarai Gray seen an early shot deflected behind for a corner. It was then Hull's chance to attack with winger Robert Snodgrass finding Curtis Davis in the box but the captain could only send his header over as the KCOM stadium was rocking. Ahmed Musa then showed his lighting pace to make his way to the by line and cut it back for Jamie Vardy who got his timing wrong as the ball sailed past him. Riyad Mahrez then picked the ball up on the edge of the box but his shot flew past the post. Demarai Gray was wet lively down the left flank as he pushed forward taking his man on at every opportunity. Riyad Mahrez then with a bit of good fortune found his way to the by line and cut back to Danny Drinkwater who seen his shot just curl past the post and wide. Former Palermo forward Abel Hernandez fired high and wide as he turned on the edge of the box with 35 minutes of the first half gone. Leicester were coming closer to scoring as Christian Fuchs was denied by Hull's keeper before Riyad Mahrez fired wide from the rebound. Musa again showed his blistering pace but last seasons hero Jamie Vardy skied it from 6 yards out. Abel Hernandez then at the end of the half found the net after a second produced a fine header and equally fine save from Kasper Schmeichel but the Uruguayan was on the scene to doctor with an overhead kick as the first ever goal at the KCOM stadium came against the champions.

The second half began with a penalty to the reigning champions after a loose ball fell to Demarai Gray who made his way into the box and went down after Tom Huddlestown bardged into him. PFA player of the year Riyad Mahrez stepped up and equalised to open his account for the season. Some questions will be asked if the penalty as replays showed the initial challenge came just outside the box. Hull were allowed very little time on the ball as Vardy and Musa closed down quickly. Wes Morgan then made a huge mistake as Hull looked to take the lead. Then a poor throw from Kasper Schmeichel allowed a great ball into the box to fall to Robert Snodgrass who found the net with a fantastic strike just on the edge of the box to make it 2-1. Leicester looked in tatters at the back with Luis Hernandez giving away a free kick on the edge of his own box. Robert Snodgrass then from the free kick clipped the wall as they won a corner. Shinji Okazaki was introduced to replace Demarai Gray and Andy King was replaced by Daniel Amartey. Ahmed Musa was then swapped to the left flank with Okazaki playing up top with Vardy. Okazaki was creating some space early on and won a free kick in a decent opportunity for the champions. Mahrez then from the free kick produced a save from the keeper. Musa then again found Vardy who couldn't get a shot away as the Hull defence closed him down. Hull were standing resolute at the back as they looked to inflict a huge defeat for the reigning champions. With just 5 minutes to go, Hull were defending brilliantly as they looked to catch Leicester on the counter attack. Frustration then set in for Ahmed Musa as he clipped the heels of the Hull defender and gave away a stupid free kick. Mike Dean decided that 5 minutes would be added on as Leicester were desperately looking for an equaliser as they faced defeat against Hull on the opening day. David Meyler then seen his late attempt fly over Schmeichel's bar as the time ran out for Leicester. Tom Huddlestone then brought down Riyad Mahrez who with the resulting free kick couldn't find a Leicester teammate in the box. One final throw of the dice want enough as the final whistle sounded as Leicester were beaten by newly promoted Hull City. This result makes the first occasion the defending champions lost on the opening day.
