We finally get to see one of the biggest rivalries in MMA history culminate. |
Two of the most influential and iconic mixed martial artists will finally lock horns this year, as former UFC stars Chael 'The American Gangster' Sonnen, and feared striker Wanderlei Silva will meet at a Bellator pay-per-view event in Madison Square Garden, New York. Both men attracted severe media attention during the filming of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3, as both the American and Brazilian severed as coaches on the heated season, which included a memorable scuffle between the pair, with Sonnen taking Silva to the ground during one particular altercation. As with the majority of Ultimate Fighter seasons, the two coaches generally meet in the seasons finale, but on this occasion, Wanderlei refused to take a random drug test, while Sonnen failed his subsequent test, ruling them both ineligible to compete. Former PRIDE FC Middleweight champ Silva, last competed back in 2013, scoring a knockout win over Brian Stann in Japan, while the now 39 year-old Sonnen, was humbled by Tito Ortiz just this previous January at Bellator 170, dropping a rear-naked choke loss in the pairs meeting, while his last successful venture to the octagon came back in 2013 also, where he submitted Maurício 'Shogun' Rua in their main event clash. Similar to Sonnen's meeting with 'The Huntington Beach Bad Boy' Ortiz, expect a huge amount of trash talking from Sonnen, and fireworks from knockout artist Silva.
