UFC 209's Lightweight scrap is in severe trouble. |
UFC 209's co-main event Interim Lightweight title fight is in jeopardy after it wasn't revealed that Dagestan superstar Khabib 'The Eagle' Nurmagomedov was admitted to hospital before the weigh ins of Saturday's card. It was also revealed that UFC officials permitted the use of an IV to rehydrate the Russian, who is said to be struggling to make weight for the contest. If Khabib is medically cleared to compete, we may see a similar situation unfold to the one that occurred at UFC 206, where Max Holloway was only eligible to claim the Interim Featherweight crown, after opponent Anthony 'Showtime' Pettis to make the weight limit. Tony Ferguson will then find himself in the same boat as 'Blessed', if he is victorious, with the belt only going to the Californian. It remains unclear if Khabib can compete, but if the Russian cannot make weight, it remains unlikely that the UFC can make a matchup in time for tomorrow's card. Some candidates for the spot, would be Stockton's Nate Diaz, Edson Barboza or former champ Eddie Alvarez. This problem once more raises the issue over weight cutting in MMA, as I believe fighters should just be able to agree on a weight that is comfortable for them, eliminating the harsh cuts.
