DJ will look to equal Anderson's record, while Souza looks to finally cement a title challenge. |
UFC Pound-for-Pound #1 Demetrious Johnson will look to equal Anderson Silva's record of consecutive title defences, when he main events UFC Kansas City against Brazilian grappler Wilson Reis in a Flyweight title contest, while fellow BJJ kingpin Ronaldo 'Jacaré' Souza looks to finally earn himself a Middleweight title shot, with a win over New Zealand prospect Robert Whittaker. The record of title defences stands at a staggering 10, with 'The Spider' running though the entire 185lbs division before an eventual defeat to Chris Weidman. Similarly DJ, has stream rolled the entire Flyweight division, twice beating Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson, finishing Henry Cejudo and an armbar win against Kyoji Horiguchi, before most recently surviving a guillotine against Tim Elliott to pick up a decision victory. Both Reis and DJ were scheduled to throw down at UFC 201, but an injury to 'Mighty Mouse' forced him from the card. Former Strikeforce Middleweight champ Ronaldo 'Jacaré' Souza has continued his fine form from his days in the now defunct organisation, winning 7 of his 8 fights, with his only loss coming at the hands of fellow rightful title challenger Yoel 'Soldier of God' Romero. Souza holds an incredible 24-4 professional record, winning 17 times by submission, scoring a brutal Kimura win against Tim Boetsch at UFC 208. After finishing Derek Brunson in the first round of their main event slot, Auckland native Whittaker, has been fortunate to be offered a shot at 'Jacaré', despite a six fight win streak, but his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu white belt, presents a real disadvantage, especially against the undeniable grappling of Souza. Whittaker does offer some decent standup, but Ronaldo has only been knocked out twice, most notably against fellow Middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi, in the pairs first meeting in DREAM, where Dutch star Mousasi, scored a rare upkick KO win.
