Moldova V Republic of Ireland:

Martin O'Neil's Republic of Ireland side headed to Moldova, as they looked to capitalise on Wales 1-1 draw with Georgia, and maintain their unbeaten run in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign. Seamus Coleman scored the decisive goal against the Georgians at the Aviva stadium last Thursday after a disappointing display from the 'Bhoys in Green', which seen Georgia twice hitting the crossbar before a second half run from Coleman was finished by the Everton full back. Moldova also played last Thursday losing 0-3 at home to Serbia with Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic finding the net. Wes Hoolahan came in for the injured Robbie Brady while the suspended Heff Hendrick was replaced by Glenn Whelan, who was also carrying a yellow card. Early pressure from Moldova's number 10 forced a free against them after he fouled Seamus Coleman after being dispossessed. Moments later, Wes Hoolahan's threaded through ball fell to Shane Long who opened up his body and slotted past the keeper to give Ireland the lead inside 3 minutes. A break down in possession for the away side sent Moldova in the counter attack which ultimately came to nothing after a poor delivery into the area. A decent spell of possession for the Republic seen Jon Walters just misjudge his leap after Stephen Ward's cross with the away side looking far more dangerous in the final third if you compare them to the opening half of the Georgia game. Seamus Coleman was once again lively down the right flank an drew win a corner for Ireland with Shane Duffy holding onto the Moldova defender, giving away a needless free kick. Moldova were capitalisng on lapses in Irish concentrating, before Wes Hoolohan laid off for Glenn Whelan who fired wide from the edge of the area. Moldova were causing little to no trouble to the Irish defence, with mistakes from the away side looking like the only chances for the home side. Ireland were given the chance to extend the lead from a free kick with Hoolahan again laying off to Whelan who's long range drive was blocked well. Moldova won a corner which was easily defended by the away side with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first period. Hoolahan once again showed his vision as he sent James McClean away who could only fire wide past the side netting, with Jon Walters in support on the right. Walters won a, decent free kick, around 25 yards from goal with James McClean again sending the ball over the
bar. A lapse in concentration from Shane Duffy allowed Moldova a chance as Bugaev raced clear and with plenty of work to do beat the on rushing Darren Randolph to give the home side a precious equaliser.

The second half began with Moldova getting us underway with James McCarthy winning an early free kick. A good chance was created for Moldova with Randolph punching to a red shirt on the edge of the area who's attempt at goal was blocked. A good run from Wes Hoolahan created a half chance and the Norwich City midfielder's shot was held by the Moldovan keeper. Another mistake from Ireland involved Darren Randolph as he misjudged the pace of the ball and conceded a corner. Southampton forward Shane Long pulled up and was replaced by youngster Callum O' Dowda for the last 25 minutes as he made his competitive debut for the senior team. A good move from Ireland resulted in them taking the lead through James McClean who found the net after James McCarthy's shot from range. Wes Hoolahan's delivery into the area from deep was headed over from Shane Duffy who's blushes seemed to have been spared by his teammate James McClean's decisive goal. Another telling run from Seamus Coleman found James McClean in the area who kept his cool to slot past the keeper to make it 3-1 and grab his second of the evening and put the game to bed. James McCarthy was replaced by Hull City midfielder David Meyler for the last 10 minutes as O'Neil looked to tighten up the midfield. Wes Hoolahan was replaced by Leeds United midfielder Eunan O'Kane for the last 5 minutes as O'Neil allowed Hoolahan to receive his deserved ovation. Another inspired Seamus Coleman performance guided Ireland to all three points in Moldova, with Martin O'Neil's side putting in a good shift, creating many good chances in the final third with James McClean and an early first half Shane long strike enough to see of the Moldavians and extend the Republics unbeaten run to three games in the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
