Report: Alistair Overeem vs. Augusto Sakai in The Works to Headline UFC Event on September 5th.

An interesting heavyweight matchup between decorated kickboxing ace, Alistair 'The Demolition Man' Overeem, and Brazilian upstart, Augusto Sakai is currently targeted to headline a UFC Fight Night event on September 5th. - with a location and venue yet to be confirmed by the promotion.

Recently returning to the win column, former Strikeforce, DREAM, and K-1 gold holder, Overeem finished Walt Harris at UFC Fight Night Jacksonville in March. Extending his undefeated run in the promotion to four. Paraná native, Sakai notched a controversial split decision win over Blagoy Ivanov at UFC Fight Night Vegas in May in his most recent Octagon appearance. News of the heavyweight clash was initially penned by ESPN reporter, Marc Raimondi.

One-time UFC heavyweight title challenger, Overeem is hoping to continue his siege to one final title shot in his storied career. With three wins in his last four outings, the Dutch fan favourite has picked up stoppages of Aleksei Oleinik, Sergei Pavlovich, and the aforenoted, Harris - between a klaxon-beating knockout loss to Jairzinho Rozenstruik in December of last year.

The 40-year-old has one of the most decorated résumés in professional MMA and is revered as arguably the greatest heavyweight striker in the sport's history. Over the course of a twenty-one-year career, the Team Elevation trainee has bested the likes of, Vitor Belfort (x2), Igor Vovchanchyn, Sergei Kharitonov, Mark Hunt (x2), Fabrício Werdum (x2), Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Junior dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski.

With fourteen victories and a sole career blemish, Brazilian striker, Sakai represents the new blood within the heavyweight ranks. The 29-year-old featured on Dana White's Tuesday Night Contenders Series back in August of 2018 - scoring a knockout over Marcos Conrado. In Octagon wins since Sakai has bested, Chase Sherman, common opponent, Arlovski, Marcin Tybura, and in May, the above-mentioned, Ivanov.

The #9 ranked contender drew massive criticism in his May matching with Ivanov, after he grabbed the fence during a takedown attempt from the Bulgarian in an incredibly close fight, with referee, Jason McCoy electing against deducting a point, which would've resulted in a decision draw. From fourteen triumphs, Sakai has landed a whopping eleven knockouts.
