Report: Frankie Edgar Details Interest in "Legacy" Fight With Dominick Cruz

Former UFC lightweight titleholder, Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar recently made waves in his bantamweight bow with an instant classic decision win over Pedro Munhoz - and has now suggested a "legacy" matchup with two-time division best, Dominick Cruz.

The Toms River native brought an end to a two-fight skid with his close split judging win over Munhoz, marking his bantamweight division bow with a win. Alliance MMA mainstay, Cruz - who's spent a considerable amount of time of his recent career on the sidelines dealing with numerous injuries, featured opposite then-champion, Henry Cejudo on short notice at UFC 249 in May, dropping a buzzer-beating second-round knockout.

Speaking with UFC announcer, Bruce Buffer on his podcast, Its Time - Edgar spoke of his intentions to make one final siege for Octagon gold but also declared his willingness to meet with fellow promotional mainstay, Cruz beforehand.

"Another guy that's also a little older and a legend himself is Dominick Cruz," Edgar said. "A lot of people are still talking about that (fight), so I'm definitely interested. The title is obviously my main goal - where my sight's on, but it doesn't have to be right away. I'm willing to fight some of those legacy fights as well."

As far as how a matchup with Cruz would play out, like the majority of his prior opponents, Edgar described a difficult puzzle to solve, comparing the pairing to a "cat and mouse game".

"I don't know, that'd be tough," Edgar explained. "If you chase him, he's really good at that, and you don't want him chasing you either. So, I think you mix it up and try a little cat and mouse game with him."

Two former UFC titleholders, Edgar claimed the 155-pound championship with a unanimous decision win over former two-weight world champion, B.J. Penn at UFC 112 in April 2010. Cruz, a two-time gold holder, was instated as undisputed champion following his transition from the now-defunct, WEC - scoring a single successful defence with a unanimous decision win over flyweight icon, Demetrious Johnson.

Limited to just seven Octagon outings since 2011 - Cruz returned in triumphant fashion in January of 2016 - taking a competitive judging win over T.J. Dillashaw to reclaim the throne. In the single defence of his second reign, Cruz took another unanimous win over three-time foe, Urijah 'The California Kid' Faber.
