Can the G.O.A.T. bag his first win since 2012? |
Widely regarded by many in the MMA community at the greatest of all time, Anderson 'The Spider' Silva returns to the octagon for the first time since his short notice loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 200, when he welcomes fellow Middleweight contender Derek Brunson to the co-main event slot. Silva, who is without a win since 2012, when he comprehensively finished Stephen Bonner, faces a stern test in the form of Brunson, who has seen his standup game evolve drastically in his last few contests, and is also a 3 time Divison II All-American Wrestler. Brunson who was noticeably sloppy in his bout against Robert Whittaker before being brutally finished, was riding a hugely impressive 5 fight win streak, including four successive first round KO wins against Roan Carneiro, Ed Herman Sam Alvey and Uriah 'Primetime' Hall. Silva's obvious dangers are his precise, accurate boxing skills, and his dexterity driven kicks, but the former UFC Middleweight king, is also a third degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, but predominately uses his grappling ability in a defensive manner, unlike say a Demian Maia or a Ronaldo Souza who are more than often looking for the finish from the mat. Although that is not to say, that Silva cannot win from the bottom, submitting Chael Sonnen in their first bout, and also forcing the tap from Dan Henderson when the pair met at UFC 82. A huge factor in this fight is the undoubtedly deteriorated chin of thenow 41 year-old Silva, who was dropped by Michael Bisping, knocked out by Chris Weidman and also absorbed punishment in his no contest battle with Nick Diaz over the last four years. This question mark over Silva's durability, may be something that the explosive, powerful Brunson can exploit, and may be able to finish the Brazilian, and also establish his superior wrestling against 'The Spider'.
Derek Brunson via knockout.
