Jorge Masvidal is within touching distance of a UFC title challenge. |
Top Welterweight contenders Demian Maia and Jorge 'Gamebred' Masvidal, are been targeted to face off at UFC Fight Night Nashville in April, as the pair vie to become the next challenger to either Tyron Woodley's or Stephen Thompson's 170lbs crown. Arguably the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner to translate his craft from the mat to the octagon, Maia is a huge dominator when it comes to grappling, truly capable of finishing any opponent, particularly by rear-naked choke. Maia, in my and many other's opinion, rightfully earned the right to face the winner of Woodley and Thompson after he mauled the fearless Carlos Condit, but when both UFC 205 stars Woodley and 'Wonderboy' fought to a majority draw, Maia was forced to wait as a true champion was still to be considered. Maia, is currently on a six fight win streak which has propelled him to the #3 spot in the Welterweight rankings. April's potential opponent Masvidal, currently occupies the #6 spot in the Welterweight division, after displaying a striking masterclass against former Lightweight championship challenger Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone, snapping the Muay Thai expert's four fight win he had accrued since his move to the division, via a second round knockout, after a controversial end to the first. Masvidal, one of the most naturally gifted boxers in the organisation, is currently riding a three win streak, once more controversially stopping Jake Ellenberger after a cage malfunction, and a UFC 201 decision victory over English veteran Ross Pearson. Masvidal may find himself one win away from a potential title shot, if he can find a way past Brazilian Maia, with a scrap against former champ 'Ruthless' Robbie Lawler an absolutely explosive matchup which may be on the horizon for the Florida fighter.
