Top 5 opponent likely for Poirier after convincing win over Jim Miller. |
In what could prove to be a potential Fight of the Night contender, Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier and Lightweight veteran and favourite Jim Miller throw down in the main card opener of UFC 208. Poirier is the #10 ranked 155lbs fighter in the UFC, but was comprehensively stopped in the first round of his bout with Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night Hidalgo, while Miller is on an impressive winning streak, finishing Takanori Gomi and picking up decision wins over Joe Lauzon and Thiago Alves, most recently at UFC 205. The first of three rounds got underway with Poirier landing some good leg kicks. Poirier sprawled expertly to avoid a double leg attempt from Miller, as a good combination on the break from the eventual clinch from Poirier, gained Miller's attention. Poirier caught a kick from Miller and tripped him, before Miller secured a takedown and took Poirier's back. As the round came to a close, both men stood and traded, something Poirier before the bout said, he wouldn't be par taking in. The second round began with a huge leg kick from Miller before a counter from Miller stung the younger Poirier. Poirier then rattled Miller who shot for a single leg which was defended by 'The Diamond'. Poirier was looking for the finish, but so far, Miller was surviving. Poirier was lighting Miller up, displaying some really slick boxing as Miller once more shot for a single leg. Poirier then instigated a takedown himself. Miller was pouring claret under his left eye, a result from Poirier's clean striking. Poirier more than likely two rounds to the good. The third and final round seen Miller return some strikes from the previous round as Poirier backed up. Poirier was suffering with his right leg, which Miller pounced on as Miller threw shots at it. Poirier cleverly secured a takedown, to prevent as much damage to his leg, which was now like a red flag to a bull for Miller. There was significant swelling noticeable from the right leg of Dustin, as Miller swarmed. Miller tried for a kimura from the bottom, but Poirier defended well. Poirier should have done enough to pick up the win. The judges handed a majority decision to 'The Diamond'.
