Conor McGregor: I'd Like To Face Tony Ferguson

The list of potential future opponents for former lightweight and featherweight champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor is seemingly endless - and certainly grows by the day.
The Dubliner returns from his fifteen-month layoff this Saturday in a welterweight main event against fan-favorite striker, Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone - with a victory guaranteeing the 31-year-old a lightweight title opportunity, according to promotion president, Dana White. That title is up for grabs in April at UFC 249, as Khabib Nurmagomedov is scheduled for a fifth pairing with longtime number one contender, Tony Ferguson - the latest name added to McGregor's proverbial list. Former interim lightweight titleholder Ferguson has established a division tying twelve fight winning streak and was briefly linked to a unification bout with McGregor before the Crumlin native was stripped of the crown due to inactivity back in 2018.
Appearing at yesterday's media day for the first time since his 2015 victory over Dennis Siver - McGregor was asked about his opponent preference if he were to earn a third crack at the lightweight crown, by MMA Junkie staff writer, John Morgan.
"I think, regardless of the result (between Khabib and Ferguson) I should probably face both of these men," McGregor said. "I would like to face both of these men. I'd like to face Tony Ferguson. I've had a history with Tony, right? We (Paradigm Sport Management) managed Tony, he was well looked after. We had him (sic), one of the highest-paid non-champions in the game, and you know, there's history with Tony. So, I'd like a bout with Tony at some stage. Of course, the rematch (with Khabib Nurmagomedov), we must make that rematch, I'm pushing for the Moscow bout, I'd love to do that. Both men are certainly in the crosshairs."
Oxnard native Ferguson ended his seven-year stint under the Paradigm Sport Management and Audie Attar banner last year, signing with Ballengee Group - with Attar the well-renowned manager of potential opponent, McGregor. If McGregor is to get his wish of a meeting with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Ferguson, he must overcome Cerrone on Saturday - and the 35-year-old must overcome Nurmagomedov, if both men successfully make the Octagon walk at the fifth time of asking.
