Demian Maia Returns At UFC Brasilia, Meets Gilbert Burns In Welterweight Affair

A welterweight grappling showdown is expected to take co-main event status at UFC Fight Night Brasilia on March 14th. as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players, Demian Maia and, Gilbert 'Durinho' Burns look to extend their win streaks on home soil. News of the pairing was first reported by Combate writer, Raphael Marinho.
Former middleweight and welterweight title challenger, Maia, has seen a resurgence from three straight losses recently - to grab three straight wins of his own. The 42-year-old will look to continue one final march to the title with a victory over Burns, adding to wins over, Lyman Good, Anthony Rocco Martin, and an eye-catching submission of Ben Askren in late October. Rio de Janeiro native, Burns, has also made big waves at welterweight throughout the last year, earning wins over Alexey Kunchenko and fellow grappling sensation, Gunnar Nelson. The 33-year-old has become a hugely valuable commodity for the promotion, due to his willingness to step in on short notice, following wins at lightweight over, Olivier Aubin-Mercier, and Mike Davis.
The pairing of Maia and Burns is a dream matchup for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fanatics, due to the two's expertise on the mat. Maia, an ADCC world champion and Pan American gold holder. Burns, an IBJJF world champion and IBJJF No-Gi world champion. Between them, they've managed an incredible twenty-two submission wins in their professional careers.
UFC Fight Night Brasilia takes place on March 14th. from the Ginásio Nilson Nelson arena. Currently, the promotion is yet to announce a main event for the card. In more welterweight action, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos will make his Octagon return as he meets with the previously noted, Alexey Kunchenko. Brazilian prospect, Carlos Antonio Junior will remain on the card despite the withdrawal of Brad Tavares recently, with Tavares replaced by Makhmud Muradov. At 205-pounds, the exciting Johnny Walker will feature against Ukrainian grappler, Nikita Krylov. 125-pound championship hopefuls, Jussier Formiga and Brandon Moreno will also feature on the card. In strawweight action, Paige VanZant will return as she tackles the rising contender, Amanda Ribas in enemy territory. Talented grappler, Rani Yahya will also feature at the event as he takes on Peru's, Enrique Barzola. At 135-pounds, Veronica Macedo will face off with Bea Malecki. In heavyweight action, Carlos Felipe meets Jeff Hughes. at 125-pounds, Maryna Moroz tackles Mayra Bueno Silva.
